New Orleans is home to world-class art museums, many of which are participating in Museum Month this August. Museum Month is a program where one museum membership gets you and a guest access to every participating museum for the entire month. Art lovers are in for a treat—several new exhibits make their debut at participating museums this August. There couldn’t be a better time to become a member and participate in Museum Month.

Dedicated to showcasing Black art, the museum is home to rotating exhibits. The museum is housed in the beautiful Tremé villa, considered by some to be one of the finest examples of a Creole villa in the city.

The Ashé Cultural Arts Center is a gallery and performance space located in the heart of Central City. Focused on emphasizing the contributions of people of African descent since 1998, Ashé remains a pillar of the community.

Newcomb Art Museum is home to new exhibits quarterly, including photography collections, mixed media, and other art. Located on Tulane University’s campus, past exhibits have included “Core Memory: Louisiana Native American Basketry” and “PER(SISTER): Incarcerated Women in Louisiana.” A new exhibit will be on display this August.

The Ogden Museum is dedicated to telling the story of art in the American South through visual art from the colonial period to the present. Check out “Aquatic Colonnade Maquettes: The Sculptures of Ida Kohlmeyer,” and “Louisiana Contemporary,” a juried exhibition that promotes contemporary art practices in the state of Louisiana.

New Orleans Museum of Art’s collection includes more than 40,000 objects, spanning 5,000 years of art. On view during Museum Month is “Picture Man: Portraits by Polo Silk.” For more than three decades, Selwhyn Sthaddeus “Polo Silk” Terrell (American, born 1964) has been photographing Black New Orleans, creating a unique body of work that blends elements of portraiture, fashion, performance, and street photography.

The CAC is the leading multidisciplinary arts center in the South. The CAC's 9th Annual Gulf South Open Call exhibition “Remember Earth?” open on August 6 and presents works by 54 artists that explore the complexities of living in an environment already experiencing the ravages of an out-of-balance world.
